You should own 100% of your website when a project is complete — the domain name, the hosting account, the WordPress files, and every design asset. That’s how we structure every engagement. But it’s not universal in this industry, and every Texas business owner should ask the question directly before signing anything.
What “Ownership” Actually Means
- Domain name: The domain (yourbusiness.com) should be registered in your name or your business’s name, in an account you control. If an agency registers it for you and holds the account, you’re dependent on them to transfer it if you ever part ways — and some won’t make that easy.
- Hosting account: Your website files should live in a hosting account you own or can access. Some agencies host client sites in bulk accounts for their own convenience. Fine for them, risky for you.
- WordPress files and database: The code, theme, and database that make your site run should be fully transferable. You should be able to move your site to a new host without anyone’s permission.
- Design assets: Logos, graphics, custom illustrations, and brand files created for your project should be delivered to you in full, in usable formats. Not held hostage in a designer’s Creative Cloud folder.
The Traps to Watch For
Platforms like Wix, Squarespace, and some agency-proprietary builders don’t give you the underlying files — you’re renting, not owning. If you stop paying or want to leave, you can’t take the site with you. You’d be starting over from scratch.
Some agencies also use proprietary theme frameworks or custom plugins that only work in their ecosystem. Even if you technically own the files, a site built on a framework only they maintain creates long-term dependency. That’s not full ownership in any practical sense.
